Halle students conduct research in Oxford

In January, Eric O’Neill, a researcher from the University of Oxford, gave the opening talk for an international series of lectures on molecular medicine and biology at Halle’s town hall. “Halox” was the working title for the series, whose main organisor is Stephan Feller, a professor of tumour biology at the Faculty of Medicine in Halle. Feller, who came to Halle from Oxford in 2013, drew on his personal contacts to breathe life into the idea. Read more

“nutriCARD” aims to make food healthier

Pizzas, sweets and crisps – we all know that these kinds of food are unhealthy, but we still don’t want to give them up. That is why, rather than focusing on changing our eating habits, researchers from the universities of Halle, Jena and Leipzig have come together in the “nutriCARD” competence cluster to try and make food healthier. By doing so, they hope to prevent cardiovascular diseases in the long term. Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death in Europe, but the World Health Organisation says that changing eating habits and adopting a healthier lifestyle could stop the diseases developing in 80 percent of cases. Meckel Collections classified as national cultural asset

As of 2015, the University of Halle holds six national cultural assets – more than any other institution in Saxony-Anhalt. The Meckel Collections of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology were included in the database in June this year. The collections contain skulls, organs, skeletons, and much more. Some 8,000 objects are stored in individual glass containers as wet or dry preparations and displayed in large glass cabinets. Read more
