3,890 new students have enrolled at Martin Luther University starting winter semester 2013/2014, including 2,800 freshmen. This fulfils the requirements made by the Higher Education Pact 2020. Thirty percent of all students come from the western federal states, including 42% of freshman. A total of 20,000 students were enrolled as of 30 September.

“In the past few years we have been moving towards a permanently high level of enrolment irrespective of the demographic development in the east,” said Rector Prof. Dr. Udo Sträter. This demonstrates the excellent level of education the university in Halle is providing and shows that its intensive service-oriented marketing activities are yielding long-term benefits.

The degree programmes with open admissions, like law, economics and political science, are again seeing a high level of enrolment. As in the previous year, law has had the highest number of student registrations at 465. According to the CHE ranking, Halle continues to offer the undisputedly best legal education of all the state schools in Germany.

There’s a first for everything – and not only for freshman. For thousands of students the first week in October was also their first week at MLU. For most it signified the start of a new stage in their lives in a new city. The festive enrolment day with Rector Udo Sträter and – for the first time – Mayor Dr. Bernd Wiegand underwent a general overhaul and debuted as a relaxed “freshman talk” in the Aula.

Freshmen could pose their questions in the Aula and around campus where many of the freshmen’s questions had been collected in advance. They received answers from the rector, the mayor, five students and representatives from sports and culture. Anyone who couldn’t find a seat in the auditorium was able to follow the discussion on a screen set up on University Square.

Also on stage: Britta Steffen, the most well-known MLU newbie in winter semester 2013/14. The Olympian is looking forward to studying at the university “…because I’ll finally be more wide awake since my education no longer has to compete with sports. I will be able to focus all my energies on it.” The 29 year old is studying for a Masters of Human Resources Management in Halle.
